Samantha interview by Times of India

What's your view on surgically engineered beauty given that you even inaugurated a liposuction clinic?

>> Every person is entitled to his/her opinion. However, we live once and have to live it to the fullest. For those of us who work in the glamour industry, there is immense pressure to look good at all times. God has created each one of us in a unique way, but there's always pressure to fit into the clichéd definition of beauty — you have to be a certain shape, your skin tone has to be a certain colour... that's how it works.

What was it like working with NTR Jr?

>> He's a superstar and the love that people give him is awesome. In my debut film, "Ye Maya Chesave" I had no idea of what was expected of me. In this film I felt the load of responsibility on me and had to live up to the expectations of my first hit. I was forced to grow up in this film.

After playing a demure role in "YMC", you play a bubbly girl in your new film. Do you think the audience will accept you in such a role?

>> After my first film I got a lot of roles that were similar to "YMC", but I can't be just doing Jessie Part I , Part II. I want to break free from that image. I want to be a versatile actor and want to do films that I can connect with.

Has success changed you?

>> Not at all. Success hasn't changed me. I'm still the same girl I used to be before "YMC" became a runaway hit. Only today I act more responsible when it comes to picking roles.

You are doing a film with Mahesh Babu. Are you nervous?

>> I'm looking forward to doing "Dhookudu" with Mahesh Babu, but I am also extremely nervous.

What next?

>> I have two Telugu films, but I'll talk about them when things are finalized. Right now I am concentrating on Telugu films and I have no Tamil films on hand.

Samanta wants to plan her career cautiously

After making her debut in ‘Ye Maya Chesave’, which turned out to be a big hit, Samanta got so many opportunities and producers queued up before her door with lots of offers.

However, she doesn’t want to accept whatever that comes in her way but decided t plan her career cautiously. Her second film ‘Brindaavanam’ also earned a positive talk and she is on cloud nine now.

Now, she is playing opposite Maheshbabu in 'Dookudu’ and is romancing with the hero in Turkey.

According to her, it is not the question whether it is the role of a city girl like Jessey (‘Ye Maya Chesave’), or like Indu (‘Brindaavanam’), the character should leave a mark in the hearts of audiences.

She says, ‘I am indebted to the Telugu audiences for giving me the star status as heroine by making two of my films big hits. I promise that I don’ t disappoint them by accepting characters that would remain as just glamour dolls.’

I am not going to sign on every project -Samantha

The men drooled over her wavy hair and husky voice and women envied the cool style in which she draped her cotton sarees and even as movie aficionados are getting over the spell Gautham Menon had cast with Yee Maaya Chesave, Samanthahas moved over to her third film with Mahesh Babu and is happily dancing with him in Turkey. Sounding matured beyond her years the actress says she's aware that after the brilliant debut she cannot get similar projects in a male driven industry but will fight for her right to connect with a character and will make a sufficient and a significant amount of contribution to the story.

"I would have gone on a signing spree after Ye Maaya Chesave," she says hoping to strike a balance in the selection of stories and not to disappoint the Telugu audiences who have given her so much love. She's one who doesn't accept a compliment as fast she does to a criticism. Jessie is now a modern city bred girl Indhu in Brindaavanam and will be someone else in the ensuing Sreenu Vaitla film and as she slips into each character, the actress is hell bent on leaving her mark.

Samantha's walk in the clouds

She is the new Sam who is making waves in Tollywood and Kollywood, following the mega success of her debut film in Telugu Ye Maaya Chesave (YMC). The film, which is the Telugu version of Gautham Menon's Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, has turned out to be a superhit in Andhra Pradesh.

The irony of it is that Samantha, who was a top Chennai model, actually started off her filmi career with cinematographer-turned-director Ravi Varman's debut film Moscovin Kaveri, which is yet to release, and followed it up with Pookada Ravi with Narain which got stalled. Her third Tamil film — Baana Kaathadi — will be her launch film in Kollywood .

Lady Luck is finally smiling on Samantha who comes across as a very confident, charming and self-assured person. In an exclusive interview to CT, Samantha says, "I was unhappy after both my Tamil films got delayed. But all that changed overnight following the success of Ye Maaya Chesave. My life changed and I'm on cloud nine, thanks to Gautham Menon. I was called a nerd in school and college and everybody thought that I would go the academic way. Nobody, even in my family, thought in their wildest dreams that I would land up in tinsel town."

Samantha takes heart in the fact that she got the opportunity to work with a director of repute like Gautham Menon so early in her career. Says the actress, "But for Jessie (the character she played in the film), I would not be here. I was very lucky to work with a director who knew exactly what he wanted and shaped my look and body language in the film. He has drawn out a performance from me which I didn't think I would be capable of so early on in my career." The film has made her the hottest star in Telugu and she's now doing projects with superstars Mahesh Babu and NTR.

However, Samantha's heart is in Kollywood. Born to a Malayali mother and a Telugu father, Sam lived all her life in Chennai and started her career as a model with a top textile showroom. Confesses Samantha, "I consider myself a Chennai girl and it would be a dream come true to make it big in Tamil films." She is pinning a lot of hope on Baana Kaathadi, directed by debutant Badri Venkatesh. The film will mark the debut of Adharvaa, son of Tamil actor Murali, as hero. "It is a romantic film laced with action and suspense. I play a college girl Priya who's doing her fashion designing course. She is a bubbly girl and meets a guy, who thinks differently, at a kite festival."

About Tamil cinema being too glamorous for her, the simple girl with a captivating smile says, "It is the character that makes the role glamorous. Jessie and her saris have made me look elegant on screen in YMC, but if the character demands it I can transform into a glam girl." Wrapping up the interview, we ask her what her future projects in Tamil are, expecting her to reel out the names of top heroes. However, Samantha surprises us by saying, "I have no clue; I may do a film with a director I admire and respect."

Dookudu team heading to Turkey for first schedule

The movie was launched few weeks ago, and the regular shooting is going to start in Istanbul, capital city of Turkey. Mahesh Babu couldn’t hide his excitement saying, “Off Istanbul on Friday for a 15day long schedule with Srinu Vytla. I'm sure it will be one rocking schedule. I am really excited and looking forward to it.

The film features our cute Samantha. Infact this is second movie that the girl signed soon after the release of Ye Maaya Chesave. While she looked quite glamorous in Brindavanam, it will be interesting to see what kind of role she does in this movie. Music for this movie is being given by S.S. Thaman.
